Everyday Cookery

Everyday Cookery is not a charity, and it is not quite an ordinary business either. It is registered in Michigan as a low-profit limited liability company (L3C), a new for-profit structure reserved for companies formed to further an educational or charitable purpose (where making money is explicitly not the only goal). It is written into our articles of organization, not just into our messaging.

In practice it means we provide subsidized tickets to every in-person cooking class, make extra food to deliver to area shelters, pay staff properly, buy ingredients at prices the growers can live on, and charge what a class actually costs to run. With no application and no questions asked, Everyday is a kitchen that is open to people who could not otherwise afford it. 

An L3C is still a for-profit entity, so a contribution here is a voluntary payment, not a tax-deductible donation, and it does not buy you anything. It helps pay for someone else’s seat.
